Dr. Richard Casagrande
Dr. Richard Casagrande has worked in integrated pest management since 1971, emphasizing ecosystem-level interactions in his teaching and research programs. He serves as IPM coordinator for Rhode Island, overseeing several programs, including ornamentals, fruits, and biological control.
Dr. Casagrande's present research concentrates on classical biological control involving the full spectrum of activities from initial foreign exploration through final evaluation of newly released agents. He maintains a USDA-approved primary insect quarantine laboratory on campus, which greatly facilitates this work. He is presently working with colleagues throughout the world on biological control of insect and weed problems that are important in Southern New England including the lily leaf beetle, hemlock woolly adelgid, birch leafminer, Cypress spurge, purple loosestrife, swallow-worts, and common reed.
